February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month

Here’s How to Build Lifelong Oral Habits

Every February, the American Dental Association shines a spotlight on something we’re passionate about here at Stovall Dental — helping kids develop healthy smiles that last a lifetime. National Children’s Dental Health Month is the perfect reminder that good oral habits start early, and the earlier they start, the better.

Start Before You Think You Need To

Many parents are surprised to learn that dental care should begin as soon as that first tiny tooth appears. Wiping baby gums with a soft cloth after feeding, then transitioning to a small toothbrush with a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, sets the foundation long before your child can hold a brush on their own. By age three, you can bump up to a pea-sized amount and start introducing the idea of flossing.

Make It a Team Effort

Kids learn by watching. When they see mom, dad, or an older sibling brushing and flossing every day, it becomes a normal part of the routine rather than a chore. Try brushing together as a family, letting your child pick out their own toothbrush, or playing a two-minute song to make brushing time something they actually look forward to.

Don’t Skip Those Checkups

Regular dental visits aren’t just about catching cavities — they’re an opportunity to monitor development, apply protective sealants, and build your child’s comfort with the dental office so it’s never something they fear.

At Stovall Dental, we love seeing our youngest patients grow into confident, cavity-free kids. If it’s been a while since your child’s last visit, February is the perfect time to schedule one. Give us a call — we’d love to see their smile.
